Overview

This project focused on transforming a fragmented and inefficient data ecosystem into a streamlined, scalable self-service experience. The existing landscape made data discovery and access complicated, with data scattered across the organisation. Creating data products required a highly technical, API-driven process, which limited contribution to a small group of users. For consumers, access was restricted and governed by manual due diligence from data owners, creating delays and security risks.

Problems

Scattered data across the organisation — hard to find and understand what's available.
Limited to a technical API-driven process for creating data products.

Streamlined, simplified, user-friendly experience for producers and consumers.

Constraints

Limited access to real data due to the back-end, API-driven nature of the platform.
Worked with dummy data as actual data formats and structures were not fully accessible.
User journey visualisations required frequent updates as new technical details emerged.
High need for adaptability due to evolving backend understanding.
Needed to deliver an MVP quickly to showcase to the leadership team and secure further funding.

Process and Approach

Research and Discovery

Conducted interviews with producers and consumers to map discovery and creation workflows.
Held weekly workshops with subject-matter experts and users to align on needs.
Technical research: Ensured seamless API integration through collaboration with specialists.

Design Decisions

Wireframing: Explored layout structures; opted for a step-by-step process on separate pages for better API handling.
Ensured UBS design system and design guides followed.
Visual Research: Analyzed Internal UBS system design patterns (e.g., Alert, wizards).

Feedback and Iteration

Role Based Access Control

Security was key: Leveraged existing Active Directory (AD) group structure
Producers can assign permissions through custom policies defining who can access each data product
System auto-detects group membership to allow/deny access securely
